Why Site Engineers are crucial to any construction project

Site Engineers are essential to the success of any build. They are the first point of contact for advice and ensuring that the project runs smoothly. The best way to think of them is as the glue that holds everything together. Without them, the site is more likely to fall apart, and as we know, a well-managed site makes for a well-structured build.

Roles and Responsibilities

The roles and responsibilities of a site engineer depend on the nature of the work in a project and involve various, highly dynamic, activities including quality control and reporting.

The site engineer possesses basic knowledge about the practical construction procedures on the site, along with the details of how they are planned. This idea of planning and coordination will help them to have proper execution of the activities on the site with desired performance.

On-Site

The site engineer spends most of their time on the construction site compared with other managers or designers. Site engineers are updated daily about the upcoming design and activities, and based on which, the next stages can be implemented.

Technical

Site activities, including the establishment of the level and the survey control, are required for the control of contracts. These must be performed by the site engineer and meet any required conditions.

To satisfy legal requirements, the engineer will also carry out regular checks whilst on construction site and ensure records are maintained to an accurate level. In addition, any unexpected difficulties raised from the technical side at any point in time will be rectified in the most efficient manner possible.

Preparing Schedules

The site engineer also ensures that the site has adequate resources to complete the tasks at hand. This is conducted by having schedules for any jobs being

carried out, while liaising with the procurement department. Any reports on the future work to be carried out at the site are prepared and produced by the site engineers in advance, and in turn, keeping the site engineer responsible for diaries and the respective work allocation.

Health & Safety

For highly dangerous work sites, such as construction sites, the site engineer will also take up the role of safety engineer. This means they have to ensure that the work carried out by the workers is as per the safety regulation of the respective area.

Every construction organisation, by law, must possess a safe working culture and practice. The site engineers then supervise its implementation and practice. There may be other health and safety officers for the organisation, but ensuring everyone’s on-site safety is a common goal for each member of the management team.

Quality Assurance

Quality is a parameter that must be kept in place from the initial planning stage to the end of the project. Any undesirable activities in construction brings a high loss of quality and money, so the site engineer assures quality by promoting the

best construction practices and assuring the work is completed and delivered without any defects or delay.

Communication and Leadership

The site engineer also has to know all the technical details and ensure it is common practice on the site. Their coordination of the information communicated is efficient, meaning they will take any details from the higher levels and accurately pass them down the chain. Essentially reflecting the need for leadership quality.
